SCILaid Case Study

Betaland MapAt the start of the course, the candidate (or student) is inserted into a reality-based scenario in which they have to advise on and manage supply chain and logistics functions.  The tasks they are requested to do are designed to facilitate the development and demonstration that they have the required skills, as defined by the competence model.

Because it is based on real life experiences in providing the logistics support to humanitarian operations, the case study scenario provides a realistic environment that enables students to apply knowledge and make decisions about real world problems, but in a safe setting.

Betaland is the main country of operations for SCILaid, the pretend NGO students work for in the Certification Program.  SCILaid supports ongoing humanitarian refugee camps along the border with Alphaland.  Transportation routes and distances, ports, warehouses, airports, geographic features, etc., are included in the maps provided.  The case study also provides detailed information about Betaland’s government and regulations, about SCILaid’s partners, and SCILaid’s internal policies – all information required to make appropriate contextual decisions in a real humanitarin operation.

In the last Unit of CHL, a hurricane hits Betaland, destroying homes and road networks, creating victims in need of shelter, food, and medical support.  During this Unit, the student is faced with meeting emergency needs without compromising support to the refugee camps, where SCILaid has its established programs.  Information is changing as the unit progresses, similar to how information becomes available during an emergency situation.  Further, being responsible for designing an emergency response program, requires the student to bring the functional pieces of all the other units together to create a strategy.
